Who We Are

Friends of Brightwood Park a NJ Non-Profit Corporation was formed by concerned citizens.   In the spirit of Noel Taylor, who worked to create this gem, we believe that the park should remain a sanctuary for all who seek nature.

As Noel Taylor wrote in the 60's:

"Brightwood Park is a quiet sanctuary for all lovers of nature where one can relax and listen to the sounds of nature, enjoy its beauty or begin to understand the lesson that man depends on wildlife for survival.  If one understands that man does depend on nature for his existence, one can also understand that man cannot continue to subdue the whole planet earth.  Man and living things must learn to live together."

FOBP's mission is to restore, preserve, and protect Brightwood Park as a Nature Preserve, to educate our community about the history of the park and the flora and fauna that inhabit it, and to encourage passive activities in the park that respect nature and the sanctuary that a nature preserve offers.  The Friends of Brightwood Park acknowledge that hiking and walking trails and nature parks are highly valued in the Westfield community for recreation and seek to ensure the park will offer these opportunities for future generations.

To this end, we seek to:
  • aid, support, and advocate for the restoration and preservation of Brightwood Park for passive recreation;
  • work with the Town of Westfield Recreation Department to offer educational opportunities in the park; and
  • obtain funding to sustain the park.

Friends of Brightwood Park has two classes of membership:  general and voting members.

General membership is open to anyone who supports our mission and would like to be kept informed of our activities in a quarterly newsletter. There a no required membership dues for this class of members.

Voting membership is open to those who support our mission and would like to be involved in a more active way.  Voting members will be eligible to attend an annual meeting to elect members of the Board of Directors and to provide input on the direction of the corporation for the coming year.  Voting members will receive the quarterly newsletter.  The Board of Directors will determine the membership dues that can be adjusted periodically.  At present, membership dues are $25/person.

Welcome!  We are a dedicated group of citizens from diverse backgrounds who share a common concern for nature.  Since we found each other, we have shared our talents and moved forward with a vision of a Brightwood Park that provides solace to those seeking quiet reflection, adventure for those seeking to explore the natural world, and community for those seeking a shared experience with other living beings.  We hope you will join us and experience nature in the midst of suburbia!
